Follow the Money

Numbers generally don't do subtlety very well, and yes, numbers can lie.

But I'm having a difficult time explaining away a discrepancy. In the wake of school closings, CPS released its FY2013 budget on a school-level basis. Funding this year is on a per pupil basis, which means many schools are facing significant budget cuts (budgets from which they must pay teachers, buy toilet paper, textbooks, and technology).

Well... most schools.

Charters are projected to have a good budget year.

Check out the CPS Interactive Budget Report, and then click on Find Your School Budget.

You can sort by the type of school (public school v. charter) or look up individual schools.

But let me save you some trouble.

Based on the FY2013 Proposed Budget...

Charter schools' budget difference (FY2012 - FY2013): $52,128,625
Public schools' budget difference (FY2012 - FY2013): -$95,462,302

Don't miss that negative sign on the public schools' side of the ledger.

If money reveals intent and priority, I think it's clear which way the city is leaning.
